first of all, i want to apologize for my hit-n-miss-ness these past few months, but i think we all know how RL is :)

now:

i have been thinking for a while about what FFF's next challenge should be and i figgered i would make it a REAL challenge. instead of writing in a particular form, this time we will creating new forms of poetry. i know it may sound large minded, or even uppity, but it is actually great fun...at least for this poetry geek :)

i have devised several forms myself in the past few years; some are based on mathematics speculum tutorialthis form i call speculum. this form is taken from a right triangle whose 'a' side is equal to 1.61803398874 (phi) and whose 'b' side is equal to 1.732050807568 (the quotient of the ratio of width to height of a vesica piscis). the hypotenuse of that triangle is: 2.3702.
by listing left to right the numbers and then mirroring them a form with 10 lines (including 2 line breaks at the zeros) is derived with the according syllables per line:
2
3
7
(0)
2
2
(0)
7
3
2
there is a tendency (though not a hard and fast rule) for the first and last lines to rhyme.
as well, the middle 2 lines have a tendency (again, a tendency not a rule) to reflect or oppose one another and rhyme.
i have named this form speculum, that being latin for 'mirrior'. the tractus form is an off-shoot of this form.
an example:
her phases
the moon
rises up:
wanton, so lustrous and full
waxing:
waning
slipping 'hind her ebon veil,
so shy is
luna.
 and/or the numerics in the hebrew language hesed tutorialhesed (hebrew for mercy) form:
the area of a right triangle whose a and b values are 72 (the numeric value of the fourth sephirot "chesed", agape/ loving kindness) and 216 (the numeric value for the fifth sephirot "gevurah", judgment/ severity) is 7.776000...
listing the numerals in left to right order gives 4 lines with this syllable count:
7
7
7
6
named hesed because between love and judgment lies mercy.
, some are variations and/or combinations of various eastern forms jabjong tutorialthe jabjong (korean for mongrel) is a form i devised by piecing together 2 of my favorite eastern forms: sijo and haibun. while i can see where it may be considered a sub-class of haibun, it differs in one major aspect: the introductory text MUST be a rhyming sijo. in my case (though not mandatory to the form) i prefer each of the 3 lines to be broken down into 2 sets of 7 syllables each:
we, who held court with the trees
       before Andal castles stood;
we, who carved faces of gods,
       'lumed in red sap, in white wood;
we, whose dreamings seemed magic,
       whose ways are misunderstood...

the rhyme scheme need not include all three lines of the sijo, but the re must be some rhyming element.
to progress to a jabjong one simply adds a complimentary haiku or senryu. i prefer (though, again, this is not mandatory to the form) either 5/7/5 or 3/5/3 syll
, and some are inspired by ideas and patters in classical western forms diciotto tutorialdiciotto (italian for 18) is a form i devised while writing a founding piece of prophecy for my fantasy novel. it is based off of the terza rima. it is composed of a set of 5 3 lines stanzas (or terzains) and a concluding couplet. the name of the form comes from the fact that each stanza contains 18 syllables. the form below outlines the syllable count per line and the rhyme scheme:
6 A
6 B
6 A
6 B
6 C
6 B
6 C
6 D
6 C
6 D
6 E
6 D
6 E
6 F
6 E
9 F
9 F
an example:
sooth the first
Away in Martyr's Wood,
(six setades 'til their war,
long years before they stood)
a wee tsatress is born
where no tsatari keep,
one dark and storm-tossed morn.
Torn from his troubled sleep
El, seeking pregnant goat,
a whelp tsatress did reap.
Without bridge, without boat
he lept 'cross foaming sway;
She cried within the moat.
Babe, red with birth's stain;
She who opened a way,
a fulcrum, a god's bane.
El found and nursed Her, gave of his days;
gave Her a doll and a namesake: Phei.
.

so here's how this challenge will work:

devise your own poetry form. find inspiration and ideas where you will, but make sure that there are definite rules. what you will submit to FFF is the TUTORIAL for your form, including the name of the form, where you drew your inspiration (if any), a description of the rules and a template (if applicable) as well as an example piece you have written.

please add a link to this challenge in the comments of your entry, and submit your entry to the '2013 challenges'  folder formfindsfunction.deviantart.c… . this challenge will remain open until midnight (GMT+1) on october 31.

drop me a note so i can add you to the roster of participants or if you have any questions about the challenge!

good luck everyone!

Would you consider qit'ah/qasida to be close enough to ghazal to go for the ghazal folder? I have a qit'ah I'm sitting on, they're kind of like a ghazal in theory but only two lines.
